Canadian uranium company Cameco Corp is to start an exploration programme at its Kintyre uranium mine in Western Australia this summer, the company has announced.
The site, which was acquired from Rio Tinto last year, will be developed as a low-cost open pit operation.
The Kintyre drill programme is scheduled to start in June or July and will run through to next year.
Rio Tinto sold the project to Cameco and its partner Mitsubishi Corp as part of an asset divestment programme aimed at reducing debt.
The sale followed Western Australia’s reversal of laws which had blocked uranium mining in the state since the 1970’s.
